When is my MOT due?

Keeping track of your vehicle’s MOT (Ministry of Transport) test due date is crucial for ensuring your car remains safe and roadworthy. Understanding what an MOT is and how to check your MOT due date can save you time, money, and avoid any legal issues. Here’s everything you need to know about your MOT.

What is an MOT?

An MOT is a legal requirement for most road users to evaluate the safety, roadworthiness and exhaust emissions of your vehicle. The MOT test will highlight any failures or advisories, which are issues that need immediate attention or require monitoring and future repair.

However, not all vehicles require an MOT. If your vehicle was built or first registered over 40 years ago and has not undergone significant changes, it is exempt.

When is my car due for an MOT?

Every car must have its first MOT test by the third year of its registration. After that, it needs to be tested annually. Missing your MOT due date will mean your car is considered illegal to drive, and can lead to fines or penalties.

How to check your MOT due date?

Checking your MOT due date is straightforward:

– Visit the GOV.UK Website and head to check MOT history

– Type in your car’s registration number

– You will see when your current MOT certificate expires and if any upcoming tests are due.

This service also allows you to check your vehicle’s MOT history, showing any past passes and failures, which can give you a good idea of your vehicle’s condition over time.

What MOT class is my vehicle?

Most cars and vans fall under class 4, but here is a breakdown of the UK classes:

    Class 1:
Motorcycles (with or without sidecar) up to 200cc

    Class 2:
Motorcycles (with or without sidecar) over 200cc

    Class 4:
Three-wheeled vehicles (over 450kg unladen weight)
    Cars (up to 8 seats)
    Motor caravans
Quads (max unladen weight 400kg, max net power 15kb)
    Dual-purpose vehicles
Private hire and public service vehicles (up to 8 seats)
    Ambulances (9-12 seats)
    Taxis
Goods vehicles (up to 3,000kg gross weight)

    Class 4a:
Class 4 vehicles (9-12 passenger seats) with a seat belt installation check

    Class 5:
    Private passenger vehicles (13-16 seats)
    Playbuses
    Dual-purpose vehicles

    Class 5a:
Class 5 vehicles with more than 16 seats and a seat belt installation check

    Class 7:
Goods vehicles between 3,000kg to 3,500kg gross weight
How early can you book your MOT?

You can book your MOT up to a month (minus a day) before your current MOT certificate expires. For example, if your MOT runs out on the 10th of July 2024, you can book your MOT test from the 9th of June 2025 onward, and the new certificate will still expire on the 10th of July the following year. This flexibility ensures you have plenty of time to arrange the test and address any potential issues.
